Gayndah is a small rural community in the North Burnett region and lays claim to being the oldest town in Queensland. The town sits on the Burnett River that feeds the many citrus orchards and grazing land.
The Gayndah Jockey Club was established 1852, when Gayndah itself was gazetted as a town. A meeting was held and 100 pounds collected to set up a track for horse racing. The first race being held on the 28th June 1852.This track was used for a few more years before it was moved to it's current location around 1856. Gayndah hosted the first Queensland Derby in 1868, the race was run over one and a half mile and was won by a horse named "The Hermit" The winning horse features in this statue on the main street.
There are three motels in town, The Colonial Motor Inn, Country Roads Motor Inn (Pet friendly) and the Gayndah Motel. The Grand hotel also has comfortable room as well as a restaurant. Riverside Caravan Park and the Manda Inn Caravan Park offer camping and cabins. The Gayndah Heritage Railway is a great place to visit but also offers camping facilities for self contained travellers. The Heritage Rail Trail is also a great walk, take in the river views and many historic rail bridges. Visit the Big Orange for a snack, see the latest exhibition at the Gayndah Art Gallery or take a stroll on the River Walk and take some time to look through the Gayndah Museum.
